But author Josh Funk totally won me over. No one in this fairytale does what they’re supposed to do. The narrator even becomes frustrated at Gretel in particular for defying the traditional plotline. And you’ll be ...more

I love children's books, but I don't usually review them. I strggled with this book.
What I liked:
--This was a fun twist on a fairy tale. Loved the unicorn spin and the ending. Seems relevant to kids today.
--I liked that the "narrator" was really the bad guy of the story.
--I liked that the kids take responsibility in the story.
What I didn't like:
--I thought the conversation bubbles across the book made it a little hard to follow.
It's Not Hansel and Gretel is the crazy story of Hansel and Gretel...oh, wait! No it's NOT the story you once knew.
Recommended for all ages. Perform it with a group of friends as a Readers Theater piece for an even more hilarious adventure in reading. (Pre-order this now!...publishing date is February 1, 2019)
This version of Hansel and Gretel - or Gretel and Hansel - turns the whole story on its head while maintaining all the recognisable components. The characters take over the story from a grumpy narrator. Adults will enjoy sharing this version with young readers. Gorgeously rich and interesting illustrations.
The book was predictable and didn't add much to the original story. I had hoped for more unique additions. My daughters would like to give it a 4 star review. They liked that it was funny, and that the narrator was part of the story, as well as the unicorn's silly name. I do think the art is very good and visually pleasing.
This twist on a classic tale is wrong on so many levels. Definitely not something to read small children. Very disappointed. I was expecting something funny, but this book is not.
This book while creative could be confusing to children. I am a well read adult and I found it difficult to follow. However, I did like the concept and enjoyed reading it. Art work while good in concept was mediocre in my opinion.
