I was not pre-disposed to like this book. Alternative fairytales worked well in the Fractured Fairytales cartoons, in Jon Scieszka’s The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales, and in Michael Buckley’s the Sisters Grimm series, but, for the most part, they’re obvious and dumb.

But author Josh Funk totally won me over. No one in this fairytale does what they’re supposed to do. The narrator even becomes frustrated at Gretel in particular for defying the traditional plotline. And you’ll be

Just in case you don’t know the story of Hansel and Gretel, this isn’t it either. The actual story is about a brother and sister who almost get eaten by a mean old witch. This story has Hansel and Gretel doing something a bit different and all the while they maintain a very positive attitude. The narrator of this, not so Hansel and Gretel, tale gets a bit frustrated with the changes being made to the story by the characters.

This delightful remake has a lot of humor. Young readers will enjoy the

🌟 My kids say this one deserves a “bonus star.” Another laugh-out-loud tale from Josh Funk. We loved Gretel and Hansel, their hilarious banter, and also searching for all the different fairy tale characters. A new favorite!

    Updated Hansel and Gretel

Per my grandson it's really cool. I like it because of the pictures, his words. He knew the story of Hansel and Gretel, so he enjoyed the changes.

    Short, sweet, and funny

It was fun to read with the kids and I doing the voices as we read out loud. It was fun to act it out.

    Very cute and funny

Read this with my 8yo and we both laughed. Going to read his other one about Jack and the Beanstalk. I’m sure we will be entertained!

Didn’t think it could get funnier than “It’s Not Jack and the Beanstalk” but this did! Absolutely hysterical. I know students and kids all over (including those trapped inside grown up bodies) will love this book tremendously.

Struggle, conversation bubbles and text made the story choppy

I love children's books, but I don't usually review them. I strggled with this book.
    What I liked:
--This was a fun twist on a fairy tale. Loved the unicorn spin and the ending. Seems relevant to kids today.
--I liked that the "narrator" was really the bad guy of the story.
--I liked that the kids take responsibility in the story.

    What I didn't like:
--I thought the conversation bubbles across the book made it a little hard to follow.
    --The

It's a book for giggles, a book for looking carefully if one wishes to discover other fairytale friends who have sneaked into this new hilarious tale by Josh Funk. That storyteller is back, trying hard to tell the "real" story, but Hansel and Gretel (excuse me, Gretel and Hansel) are telling it their way. No, the parents aren't plotting to get rid of them and NO, there is not a wicked witch, at least not one that seems familiar. It's time to get this book for lots of laughs to "hear" and to "se ...more

I love when you take a classic tale and flip it on its head. This book was adorable and funny and would be perfect for any kid to read with their parent. The author attempts to tell the story of Hansel and Gretel but everything goes off the rails and the characters begin to take over the story. It's funny to watch because the author seems completely helpless to stop their own characters from changing things to the way they want. It was fun and put a smile on my face.

Twisted tales are so much fun, and this new title by Josh Funk is sure to leave you laughing out loud!
It's Not Hansel and Gretel is the crazy story of Hansel and Gretel...oh, wait! No it's NOT the story you once knew.
Recommended for all ages. Perform it with a group of friends as a Readers Theater piece for an even more hilarious adventure in reading. (Pre-order this now!...publishing date is February 1, 2019)

Josh Funk is always a delight, and this book is extra special because I received a copy at ALA Midwinter, which he autographed! Funk has the ability to write books that will entertain both young and old; kids may not get all of the jokes, but they are still funny to them. This would be a great book to explain different viewpoints of a story, including the poor narrator who has to put up with Gretel and Hansel talking back!

I absolutely love this series! After reading the Jack and the Beanstalk book, I was super excited to find out that he wrote another in the series. With the first book, I had several students help read the book aloud, each reading a different character. The students loved it! I will be doing the same with this book. It's super cute with lots of good laughs. This will be a favorite in my school.

Hooray for Josh Funk and his new masterpiece, It's Not Hansel and Gretel! We read the first page, and my son immediately said, "YAY! It's like the Jack and the Beanstalk book!" This fairy tale retelling doesn't disappoint. It was quite fun to read aloud, and it offers real flexibility for classroom use. It's a great pick for teachers!

New take on a fairy tale

This version of Hansel and Gretel - or Gretel and Hansel - turns the whole story on its head while maintaining all the recognisable components. The characters take over the story from a grumpy narrator. Adults will enjoy sharing this version with young readers. Gorgeously rich and interesting illustrations.

Not as clever as I had hoped for

The book was predictable and didn't add much to the original story. I had hoped for more unique additions. My daughters would like to give it a 4 star review. They liked that it was funny, and that the narrator was part of the story, as well as the unicorn's silly name. I do think the art is very good and visually pleasing.

So glad there are more in this series of "It's Not a Fairy Tale" books from Josh Funk. They are hilarious and entertaining, and this one is better than the first (It's Not Jack and the Beanstalk). Definitely better as a read aloud with multiple people to take on the various roles.

Dont waste your time money and brain cells...

This twist on a classic tale is wrong on so many levels. Definitely not something to read small children. Very disappointed. I was expecting something funny, but this book is not.

    Great little book

I am a grandma and read this book myself just for fun. And I think kids and adults alike will love this humor. Can't wait to read more by this author. Hopefully an adult novel with humor.

    Fairy tale spoof

Twenty pages of a well drawn story with little twists on every page. Twists as in it pretends to tell the classic Hansel and Gretel story but tells it wrong by constantly breaking the fourth wall.

Not your grandmother's Gretel and Hansel

This book while creative could be confusing to children. I am a well read adult and I found it difficult to follow. However, I did like the concept and enjoyed reading it. Art work while good in concept was mediocre in my opinion.

This wasn't my cup of tea--but I bet 3rd graders would enjoy it. It's written like a comic book with remarks by Hansel and Gretel that are just the type of humor that kids enjoy. Luckily it took less than a half hour to read it.
    Robert C. Rogers
Cute, but kind of corny. The author took the story of Hansel and Gretel and retold it with the characters talking back to the narrator and changing the story. Fun, but it was random without any point to it.

Josh Funk is a celebrity in our house. We just love his books and particularly the humor in these fairy tale stories. Love the interaction between the narrator and the characters, as well as the return of characters from It's Not Jack and the Beanstalk. Highly recommend!

The second in the “It’s Not” fairy tale series was definitely a success! Gretel and Hansel were feisty characters who know their way around the woods and a fairy tale! Loved the shout out to allergies! Highly recommend!

Josh has another fractured fairy-tale coming at you soon! (Love these meta-stories that have you giggles at each page turn!) Educators, it would be fun to see what your students could do with their own fractured retellings!
