Les As a man, I found the author's ability to get inside male emotions quite extraordinary. I enjoyed the book enormously; but in spite of a considerable amount of action the critical story is the hero's internal emotional struggle.
Sherri I don't think that it was written for women, though if you are looking for action packed, it is not. It is more of a human study, the life of a man during hard times. I think there are some lessons to be learned from it. Give it a try.
Melissa B Don't let that assumption ruin it for you. It's written from a male perspective and i think she did a really good job!
Violet I was just wondering this same question, I am looking for a book to listen to with my boyfriend on a long road trip and was worried it would be to girly, thanks for asking!
Sean McCarron The protagonist's sentimentality is a bit more than I am used to (in terms of book choices), but considering the time period and what compels him to join the Circus, it's to be expected. This book is an interesting look at relationships (romantic and friendship) and power struggles, but it's also a historical piece that paints clear and vivid pictures of what it was like to travel on trains and put on a circus. It's loosely based on real events, characters, animals, and settings, which adds an extra level of intrigue in getting through the book.
